Montenero: the hilltop site
of a handsome pilgrimage church, It delives its origin from
an image of Our Lady which, according to legend, was miraculously
transported here from Island of Euboea in 1345.
Passed the beautiful "Valle di
Quarata" (Quarata Valley) one reaches the beautiful
"Piazza del Santuario" with a View of Leghorn.
Many pilgrims visit Montenero every year because of their
devotion to Mary of Montenero Patron of Tuscany.

of the Holy Virgin of Montenero is a destination for pilgrimages
and attracts tourist from many parts of Italy.
All people from Leghorn know that
on the late XVIII century and at the beginning of XIX century,
Montenero was holiday destination for writers, poets, sculptors
and lovers of nature. We would like to mention: Smollet,
Foscolo, Byron, Shelley, Lamartine, Longfellow and the famous
Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.
