| Island
of Elba Marciana Marina (Isola d'elba)
Located on the slants of Mount Capanne at
375 meters altitude, Marciana is a very ancient settlement
that probably dates back to the Roman era. The winding road
that climb the hillsides, through chestnut woods, is well
worth facing to be able to enjoy the marvelous view over Marciana
Marina and the village Poggio.
The Marciana area started flourishing in the
Middle Ages and later became the seat of the Appians whose
residence can still be visited and is well kept. A simple
walk through the narrow streets of Marciana can be much appreciated,
winding through arches, flower ornated balconies and the typical
houses settled on the slopes of the hill. The stairs are pitiless,
but it is worth the effort once you reach the picturesque
corners of the village and get to enjoy the breath-taking
views from the village' squares.
Marciana also guards a considerable historic, architectonic
and artistic patrimony. Worth visiting is the great Pisan
Fortress that offered shelter to the people of Marciana during
invasions, the Archeological Museum at Palazzo Pretorio and
the San Lorenzo church. A path that in less than an hour by
foot allows you to reach the Madonna del Monte Sanctuary,
takes off from the Pisana Fortress. At only three kilometers
from Marciana you get to the absolutely charming and chestnut-wood
surrounded village Poggio that still preserves narrow medieval
alleys where driving is strictly forbidden.
From Poggio, nearby the cemetery, you come
on to a narrow countryside lane which in about 40 minutes
takes you to the Romitorio (Hermitage) di San Cerbone, while
a carriage road bordered with chestnut trees leads you to
the Fonti di Napoleone. Numerous paths starting from Marciana
will allow nature lovers to discover Mount Capanne that with
its more than 1000 meters altitude is the highest top on the
island. If you would like to immerge into Imperial history,
take on to the road that runs along Punta della Zanca and
get down to the Faro (lighthouse) di Punta Polveraia where
you can sight a rock known as the Sedia di Napoleone (Napoleons'
chair) where it is said the nostalgic emperor contemplated
his beautiful Corsica.
