| Bolgheri
town is situated in the heart of the Etruscan Coast and
not far from Bibbona, is famous for the Viale dei Cipressi
(Cypresses), which gained everlasting fame in the poem "Davanti
a San Guido" by Giosuè Carducci who lived here
from 1838 to 1848.

The view of the
countryside with the cultivated fields and the typical
colours of the Tuscan countryside leaves you enchanted.
At the end of the "Viale", you get to the village from
a single arched door, which gives you an idea of the
atmosphere that you breathe in the old village. In front
of it there is the castle, with its red bricks, creating
a contrast of colours with the green of the olive trees
and the cypresses which surround it.
At Bolgheri
town everything has kept its original aspect and you feel
the sensation that time has stopped. The historical centre
seems to have kept its old original urban structure.

History
Bolgheri
town was completely destroyed in 1946. The origin of its
name derives from Bolgheri, a famous local jurist and defender
of human rights. In 900 a.C. The town was called “Sala
del Duca di Allone”. Bolgheri was an ancient fief of
the “Gherardesca” family; it didn’t change
till 800 when important public works began. The castle was
destroyed in 1496 by Maximilian
I’s troops.
The beautiful “San Giacomo and San
Cristoforo” church, the hospital and the several craftshops
were built in 700. The castle and its tower date back to
800.
The vegetation is
very rich and varied: here you can find several different
types of trees such as oaks, pines, junipers, cork-oaks
and many others. Little rivers run through the green pinewood:
the most famous are Fossa Cammilla river
(its mouth is called Cioccaie) and Fossa di Bolgheri which
bounds the town from Castagneto. Most of the wood is private
so it is a rather inaccessible place. In the past Bolgheri
was a very important port where goods came from everywhere.
THE BORGHERI WINE
Bolgheri is perfect for Winelovers this town is well-known
for its wine produced from the grapes from the surrounding
countryside and also for the stables where famous horses
are kept.
This town located in the commune of Castagneto
Carducci about 60 miles South-West of Florence, the latitude
is approximately the same as Montalcino and Montepulciano.
What distinguishes Bolgheri from these historically well
known wine regions, is its proximity to the sea. This
maritime influence was previously a reason for not considering
cultivation of the vine for anything but household use,
forming part of the general polyculture system. A common
feature the wines possessed was a salty flavor resulting
from the sea air.
The
creation in 1994 of DOC Bolgheri Rosso and Rosso Superiore
signified a recognition of the use of international grapes,
and these classifications now incorporate ten estates.
Ironically, Satta's Vigna a Cavaliere (pure Sangiovese)
is not recognized by regulators, only managing to achieve
the IGT designation. One further category was created--that
of DOC Sassicaia, the first and only single estate in
Italy to achieve this.
Until
recently the name of Bolgheri was not well known.
It might have surprised many, except those keen label
spotters with a eye for small print, that Sassicaia was
from here. It was a similar situation for Ornellaia and
Belvedere's Guado al Tasso, who were more well known
for the Antinori name on the label than the area from
which the wines came.
