The
Camaiore town is surrounded by hills, the area extends between
the the Tyrrheanian Sea and mountain tops of the Apuan Alps
The name is derived from the Latin Campus Major , or
wide level space .
Around 190 B.C., in this vast area at the foot of the mountain Prana, the Romans
constructed fortifications: the Colonia Lucensis .
The first nucleus of inhabitants
is documented as being in 984 A.D. along the via Francigena : The Archbishop
of Canterbury, on the return trip from Rome, took note in his diary of the
village Camp maior, between Lucca and Luni , as a leg of
his journey.
Around 1300 Camaiore was the capital of a vicariate of the Republic of Lucca
and its defense systems were augmented. From 1374 the village was provided
with city walls, including thirteen towers and a stronghold.
