In the ancient times Limite
was known as a river landing-place. Recent studies testify
the presence of an Etruscan harbour. Thanks to a good network
of trails extending on the Montalbano, this area is particularly
suited for walk and excursion fans. Trials lead up on beautiful
hills with woods and olive trees, passing by interesting
buildings and country-churches such as the Church of San
Jacopo a Pulignano and the Abbey of San Martino in Campo.
The Castle of Capraia - Castello di Capraia Its
position on a high spur on the bank of the Arno River helped
in preserving the structural distinctive features of a
medieval village. The village has very old origins. It was
a fief of the town of Pi-stoia, which could control road
and river traffic between Florence and Pisa from the top
of the spur. Towards 1250, Capraia was
a theatre of fights between Guelphs and Ghibellines.
La Fornace Pasquinucci
Old kiln for producing terracotta, it was recently transformed
into a beautiful show room. In the restored building, one
can still admire the structures used for the different phases
of clay transformation, such as the "trogoli":
places for the clay drying, the "ter-rai", the
kiln etc.
Chiesa di San Jacopo a pulignano Built during the 12th Century on the top of a hill, in the
Bibbiani farm. As a Tuscan Romanesque church, it is quite
unusual. It was used up to 1960s. Now, one can
visit it only by appointment. It is situated along trekking
trail n.5 Limite-Pulignano-Valicarda, in very evocative scenery.
La Badia di San Martino in Campo Romanesque parish church dating back to the 12th Century.
It houses beautiful frescoes, a stone altar and a stone font.
It is at the limits of Capraia and Limite territory, towards
Carmignano, near well-known Artimino. One can visit it by
appointment.
Limite town Rowers' tradition The history of Limite is strictly connected
to the navigation of the Arno River. The "Navicellai" of
the town achieved great renown.
On their boats, they carried
goods up and down the river. They were very good at steering
their boats along the most difficult stretches of river,
so they were demanded for the most difficult transports.
As a result, shipyards opened in this area.
They later
moved to the Tyrrhenian coast, in order to avoid problems
connected to the transport of boats. The first Italian Boating
Club was founded in Limite. It won and still wins important
competitions. Every year, there is a revival of rowers' tradition
thanks to the "Palio
di San Lorenzo" and the "Palio con la Montata".
They are river regattas run on the "gozzi" by the
various districts of the town.
The "gozzi" are
typical boats with eight oarsmen, a steersman and a climber.
