Regello have an extention
of 121.9 sq km at the most eastern part of the Province
of Florence, from the bottom of the Arno valley to the top
of the mountains of Pratomagno, from 103 metres above
sea level to a height of 1537 metres at Poggio dell’Uomo
di Sasso.
A few kilometres from
Florence, on the direct line which unites the principal Tuscan
city to Arezzo, Umbria and then to Rome. Opposite are the mountains
of the Chianti, a natural boundary between the upper Valdarno
and the territory of Siena.
The antique name “Castelnuovo della
Pieve di Cascia” was changed under the Lorena, at the
time of Pietro Leopoldo, to “Reggello”, which
comes from “rege”, a term that indicated the
antique holdings of the Longobards.
Reggello is famous for its agricultural products.
An international exhibition and market based on the local
extra-virgin olive oil is held here each December.
The parish
Church of San Pietro a Cascia nearby dates from the 12th
century and the reign of Countess Matilde di Canossa.
A portico
precedes the entrance to the church, which is completed by
a simple bell-tower.
The interior is divided into three naves
whose capitals are carved with marvellous archaic figures,
similar to those at the Church of Gropina.
The called
road of
the seven bridges starts for Arezzo from here and is
of great historical and artistic interest, apart from the
beautiful scenery to be found en route.
