Today you will find a wine shop around every bend, with
some of the better ones being found in the Piazza Matteotti.
The statue in the middle of the square is of Giovanni
di Verrazzano, the man who discovered New York harbour.

In 1325 the fortified town of Greve was burned to the ground
by Castruccio Castracani, the Duke of Lucca,. The rebuilt
church of Santa Croce which houses beautiful paintings of
the school of the Beato Angelico stands at the bottom end
of the picturesque asymmetrical main square of Greve. This
ancient triangular piazza with a succession of palaces,
porticoes and loggias that come to a pinnacle with the neoclassical
facade of the church of Santa Croce is where the local marketplace
was established and people from miles around came and met
every Saturday. On one side of the piazza is the monument
to the explorer, Giovanni da Verrazano (who discovered New
York Harbor). Your next stop will be at the Cennatoio winery
for your first wine tasting of the day before heading to
a local restaurant for lunch.
