The town: Gambassi terme
Gambassi Terme is situated in an extraordinary environmental habitat, both for historical and artistic treasures that the area contains, and for its ideal climatic conditions. It boasts copses and pine woods that cover 60% of the territory and create an enviable natural framework for recreational activities. The woods, olive groves and farm-castles are becoming more and more popular with people who find in farm-stay accommodation a new answer to their needs for alternative holidays to re-discover the country ways of life. To further improve and safeguard the habitat of this large wooded area, the project "Dolce Campagna, Antiche Mura" has been set up, with itineraries suitable for hill-walking, horse riding or mountain bikes.

This picturesque locality lies on a hill at 332 mt height at the entrance of the town a wonderful fresco of the Florentine school of the 14th century depicting a Madonna with child St. Michele and saints, facade of a parish church. The park of the Palazzo Comunale of the 17th century, the church of St. Jacob and saint Stefano of the 13th century and the church of the Misericordia with priceworthy terracotta statues deserve a visit bearing in mind too that this church was a glass handicraft center during the 14th century.

Some important annual events are "Classica", the festival of chamber music in June, the "Mostra Mercato" or antique fair in the last week of August, and several shows under the name of "Valdelsaestate".

The territory of Gambassi
The territory of the Municipality of Gambassi appears to have been inhabited since the Neolithic era, but the highest population was registered in the Etruscan-Roman epoque, as evidenced by the remains found in various areas. In antiquity, it was certainly "terra di pass" (a passageway) for the Etruscans on their way to the dominion of Volterra, for the Romans in relation to the Via Clodia between Siena and Lucca, and in the Early Middle Ages, for travellers and particularly for the pilgrims passing along the Via Francigena.
