| Dotted
with palm trees and overlooking an azure sea, the tranquillity
of the Italian countryside with its olive groves, holm
oaks, pines and cypress trees is within a short walking
distance, whilst the exquisite swimming cove at Paraggi
is only a few minutes drive. From to the summit of Monte
Portofino, above the town, are stunning panoramic views
across the Mediterranean to the mountains of Corsica.

The huge block of puddinga in the Portofino Promontory
forms the most to the north coast protected area in the
occidental Mediterranean , among fresh European woods and
the warm Mediterranean maquis, among chestnut and olive
civilizations, farm and sea traditions. It has been protected
since 1935. It hosts one of the Mediterranean largest flower
concentrations, a remarkable variety of birds and invertebrates,
important architectural elements and some of the best-known
sceneries in the world. At the bottom of the sea the whole
range of high Tyrrenic biocoenesis is present.
The Portofino Park offers a synthetic view
of the Ligurian coast, either from a naturalistic or historic-anthropological
point of view. In fact the present aspect of the territory
is the result of an original form of coevolution between
nature and humain activity. This has led to the creation
of a surprising variety of biological systems and environments
but also to a specific material culture (synthesis of sea,
olive and chestnut "civilizations"). A very dense
network of paths crosses wild environments, rural settlements
and sea villages rich in art and history and shows views
that have become part of the Mediterranean visual legend.
The real protected area is surrounded by a frame-area of
about 3400 hectares. The park territory reaches Recco, Camogli,
Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo, Zoagli and
Chiavari municipalities.
